1 in 10 Girls Aged 17, Test Positive for Chlamydia - 11/19/2007
A Berlin-based organization has urged that young women should talk to their gynecologist about being tested for chlamydia because they run a higher risk of contracting this sexually transmitted disease (STD). In fact, 1 in 10 girls aged seventeen in Germany test positive for chlamydia. Unfortunately, a majority of these young women lack adequate information about this STD and the harm that this disease can cause.
Chlamydia can cause infertility in one out of every four or five young women who get it. But the adverse outcomes of this disease can be prevented if detected and treated at an early stage. However, since the disease fails to cause noticeable symptoms it often goes untreated until it inflicts severe damage to the reproductive stage during the late stages of the diseases.
In addition, to causing infertility, chlamydia increases the risk of ectopic pregnancies, pelvic inflammations and pain during intercourse.
