A New Study, May Bring New Hope For Infertile Couples - 10/26/2007
A recent study in the journal Nature has pinpointed the gene that plays an essential role in sperm development. The gene, Jhdma2a gene, if defective can cause cases of infertility, said Dr Yi Zhang, lead author of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute study. Dr. Zhang and his team found mice lacking this gene were infertile and produced low counts of abnormal sperm. They also discovered, with closer investigation, that mice bred without the Jhdma2a gene had abnormally shaped heads and immobile tails. This led the Howard Hughes team to believe that this gene is important for the stage of spermiogenesis (production of sperm) where the DNA gets packaged in the head of the sperm so it can penetrate the surface of the egg. Since mice without this gene had genetic defects in their sperm that led to infertility. This study holds potential for creating new infertility treatments that compensate for the lack of this gene in men who have genetic defects in their sperm.
