Acupuncture May Increase Fertility Rates - 09/11/2007

An increasing number of studies show that acuptuncture may help boost fertility. According to the 2002 study conducted by two teams of researchers in Germany and the People's Republic of China, supplementing assisted reproductive techniques with acupuncture increased the rate of pregnancy. The researchers found that the pregnancy rate of women undergoing in vitro fertilization increased from 26 percent to 43 percent in the women who received acupuncture before and after IVF.

Similarly, a number of women have reported successful pregnancy with the use of acupuncture after losing hope of getting pregnant by other methods. One of these women is 36 year old Christy Martin, who after two and half years of trying and being told her ovaries “were done,” turned to acupuncture. After five months of receiving acupuncture treatments two times a week and regularly eating herbs, Martin found out that she was pregnant and (now 8-months pregnant) continues her acupuncture treatments.

How does acuptuncture work?
“The goal is to try to improve blood flow to the uterus and improve blood flow to the ovaries,” said Kirsten Karchmer, an acupuncturist with the Texas Center for Reproductive Acupuncture. Some of the claimed benefits of acuptuncture include regulating blood flow, lowering stress, inducing ovulation and improving egg equality.

How do you know if acuptuncture will work for you?
Well, there’s no harm in trying. At the least, acupuncture may help reduce stress. And who knows, a little less stress may give you a little more baby dust.
