Fertility Patients Would Donate Stored Embryos to Research - 06/26/2007
According to a recent study conducted by Duke University and Johns Hopkins University, 6 of 10 individuals would donate surplus embryos that they had following in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment to stem cell research.
The survey was conducted using a comprehensive questionnaire that was mailed out to 2210 patients at nine infertility treatment centers across the United States. The findings suggest that a higher number of embryos would be available for research than was previously thought.
Sixty percent of the individuals contacted returned the questionnaire, including 1020 indivuals who stated that they currently had embryos in storage.
Sixty percent of the study's participants stated that they would donate embryos for research concerning the treatment of disease and injury, while 22% would donate surplus embryos to another couple. In addition, 61% of individuals would donate embryos for infertility treatment research.
